These stoneware pots are made with a coil and pinch method plus some scraping and paddling. Much of the texture and marks on the surface are incidental to the process but some are intentional, and they are enhanced by a red iron oxide stain and a kaolin and wood ash slip. The iron oxide stain helps to emphasize the irregularities in the surface of the clay while the clay/wood ash slip reacts to both the iron stain as well as the iron in the clay body, turning a dark red brown where thin and a cornmeal yellow where thick.
